Principles and beliefs

HELP Africa believes in African wisdom:

‘A visitor has the biggest eyes in the household where he is welcomed into’

In reality, those eyes are limited as to how far they can see, no matter how big they are. He may have a big nose and big ears too, but these too are limited in their function. In contrast, the people in the household have small eyes, small noses and small ears, but they are more perceptive to the things that go on in the household.

In other words, no matter how vast your expertise and resources , as a visitor or one new in a given area, you will not be able to find the best solutions to the local problems unless you work with the people concerned.

A people-centered local approach

We believe in the philosophy of teaching people ‘how to fish instead of giving the fish’.

We do not impose solutions, but rather assist people who assist themselves.

We believe in the lasting value of local solutions and local resources. Family and community labor and other resources are used and shared with others within the community and the country.

HELP Africa recommends collaboration  first at the local level and then finally, the outsider is the last to come in with his skills, expertise and other contributions.

We believe in national peace and justice and equal opportunity starting with families and communities.

We believe a woman is the core of the African family hence the core of the community. Consequently empowering her, through training and financing inevitably benefits the whole family and the whole country. Women and children should be taught good practices, good governance , democracy and conflict resolution first within the family, at school, in the workplace, and in the community at large.

International networking

We engage the international community through cultural and educational exchange programs, facilitate trade between local African businesses and international businesses and clients, and believe in an international staff membership to tap into diverse skills required to implement and evaluate our vision.
